Lovin' Lili's Bistro

Another great restaurant has been added to Magnolia Street... Lili's Bistro. FWJanet and I tried Lili's for lunch last week and had a great experience. From the atmosphere, to the food, to the outgoing server and friendly owner, Vance Martin - everything was wonderful. FWJanet, who usually orders a salad, had an unusual hankering for a good ol' hamburger so that is what she ordered. It was served with yummy waffle fries which she had topped with gorgonzola crumbles and green onions. I opted for one of the restaurant's own unique sandwich concoction called a roulade which is sandwich ingredients rolled in dough that is fresh-baked. Think hot pockets with a fluffy homemade roll like covering. My dish was also served with the waffle fries. The fries would have been better if the gorgonzola crumbles were melted over the fries rather than just crumbles b/c the crumbles just fell off the fries. Since we were there during a lunch rush, I am hoping the cheese was intended to be melted, but it simply slipped through the cracks.

The restaurant had a great atmosphere and seemed like a wonderfuly place to have dinner. The dinner menu is vastly different than the lunch menu, but both have delicious sounding descriptions. When I looked at the dinner menu, EVERYTHING sounded fabulous. FWJoey and I are looking forward to trying Lili's for dinner and will report back when we do!

Nonna Tata: Your wait will be worth it!

FWJoey and I knew there was a lot of buzz swirling around the tiny Italian restaurant on the southside. Many friends had already been and were raving about it and the local foodies had written wonderful reviews about the authentic cuisine. Sometimes, this kind of buzz makes me nervous because it often means I get my hopes up for a fabulous dining experience only to be disspointed by a buzz kill. Not the case with Nonna Tata though! On a recent Friday night, we set out on a double date and headed to Magnolia Street. We arrived around 8:00 and the tiny, and I do mean tiny, restaurant was packed. The wait was estimated to be at least an hour. In fact, we were the last name place on the wait list (the restaurant closes at 10:00 on Fridays). We contemplated going somewhere else, but since we had plenty of red wine and found out we could enjoy drinking it on the sidewalk while we wait, we decided to be patient and wait for our table. The wait....was worth it.

FWJoey and I were underwhelmed by the salad, but were both overwhelmed with our entrees. FWJoey had the chicken dish which were 2-3 thin, lightly breaded chicken breasts served with a penne pasta and red sauce. FWJoey thought the dish was delicious. I tried it and thought it was good, but enjoyed my own dish much more. I cannot remember the name of the dish that FWMeredith and I shared, but I do remember it was amazingly scrumptious. I want to say we had a homemade pasta stuffed with ham and Parmesan and topped with a delicious bechamel sauce (white sauce). It was the first dish listed in the entree section. Just below it was the gnocchi, which is what I was wanting to order, but they were sold out of the dish. Must be good!

By dessert, we were full of fabulous food and full of red wine, but that did not stop us from trying a couple of homemade desserts. We had the chocolate mousse and something with nutella. The nutella dessert was the better of the two and it was delic!

The food prices are very reasonable and there is no corkage fee assessed. We'll be going back (and we'll be prepared for a long wait because so will everyone else). One last thing, although Nonna Tata does not take reservations, you can show up, put your name on the list, leave your cell phone number and then leave. They'll call you when your table is ready.
